In this lesson you will learn how to ask about a place or about where something or someone is located using どこ and ここ/そこ/あそこ.

Let’s see how to ask where something or someone is located, and how to answer the question, with the following dialogue:
A: たなかさん は どこ です か。
B: たなかさん は ここ です。
[Tanaka-san wa doko desu ka.] – Where is Mr Tanaka.
[Tanaka-san- wa koko desu.] Mr Tanaka is here.
A: わたし の スマホ は どこ です か。
B: スマホ は そこ です。
[watashi no SUMAHO wa doko desu ka.] – Where is my smartphone?
[SUMAHO wa soko desu.] – (Your) Smartphone is there.
A: こうえん は どこ です か。
B: こうえん は あそこ です。
[kõen wa doko desu ka.] – Where is the parc?
[kõen wa asoko desu.] – The parc is over there.
If you have read the previous lesson, you might have recognised the same pattern for the use of ここ/そこ/あそこ as for これ/それ/あれ:
- ここ to indicate a place close to the speaker,
- そこto indicate a place close to his/her interlocutor,
- あそこ to indicate a place away from the speaker and his/her interlocutor
In addition you have seen the use of the question word どこ which can basically be translated as “where?”.
Therefore nothing complicated again here, this just requires a little bit of practice to get used to it. So, let’s practice then.
Exercise 1:
Translate the below sentences into Japanese using the following vocabulary.
いぬ – dog
くるま – car
ほん – book
The book is there (next to you).
The car is parked over there (away from us).
The dog is here (next to me).
