Japanese Lesson – Learning Kanji 006

Hello! Hello!

I hope you are doing well. Here is our sixth lesson in the Learning Kanji series. This time you will see (and learn): 千万土金曜. Let’s go!

  • 千 (セン) as a thousand:

  • Meaning(s):
    • ten thousand

Examples:

  • 万 (マン) as ten thousand
    • この くるま は 三千万円 かかります。(さん・ぜん・まん・えん)

    • / This car costs thirty million yens (~280,000 USD). /
  • 万 (バン) as ten thousand:
    • 万ざい!(ばん)
    • / banzai! /

Note: 万ざい litteraly means “10,000 years”. It is used to wish eternity and prosperity to others during celebrations. The expression got well known during WWII where it was used by Japanese soldiers as a short for “てんのう へいか ばんざい” / Emperor / His majesty / long live / / Long live the Emperor! /.

Note: どう です か is a casual way of asking for someones advice, in more formal situations use いかが です か.

  • 金 (コン) as gold:

  • 金 (かね ) as money:
    • お金もち って いい な と おもいます。(かね)

    • / I think that being rich looks cool. /
    • この ドレス は ほしいです が、金 は ない。

    • 金ものでん は 金もの を うる みせ です。(かな・かな)
