Japanese Short Stories – サルカニ合戦 – 4

カニさん は、かき の き の した で まって いました が、いつまで たって も サルさん が かき の み を とって くれない ので まちくたびれてしまいました。

de Enclitic particle: {place of action}. Indicates that what precedes is the place where the action is made.
まって いました matte imashita Verb: まつ, to wait.
っている: progressive form, to be waiting.
まっていました: past tense, was waiting.
ga Conjuction: but
いつまで itsumade how long? (literally: when until)
たって tatte Verb: たつ, to stand.
って: Progressive (here implicit as いる is not present), to be standing.
mo Enclitic particle: {even though}. Indicates that what even though the subject is doing what precedes, the following proposition happened.
とって くれない totte kurenai Verb:とる, to take.
って: verb sequencing.
Verb: くれる, to do for me.
くれない: Informal negative form, to not do for someone else.
とって くれない: (Mr Monkey) did not get (kaki fruits) for him.
ので node Enclitic particle: {because}. Same as から but used in more objective cases and sounds more polite.
 1 まちくたびれてしまいました machikutabireteshimaimashita Verb: まちくたびれる, to get tired of waiting
まちくたびれてしまう: To do something by accident, against the subject’s will, to end up getting tired of waiting
まちくたびれてしまいました: Past tense, ended up getting tired of waiting

「おーい、サルさん、じぶん だけ たべていない で、ぼく に も かき をとって おくれ よ」

おーい o-i Ahoy! Interjunction used to get someones attention.
じぶん jibun oneself
だけ dake only
たべていない tabeteinai Verb: たべる, to eat.
たべて いる: Progressive form, to be eating.
たべて いない: Negative form, to not be eating, here don’t eat.
de Particle: {is, and so}. て form of desu.
ぼく boku I, me (informal)
ni Enclitic particle: {destination}. Indicates that what precedes is the destination of an action.
mo Particle: {also}
とって おくれ totte okure Verb:とる, to take.
って: verb sequencing.
Verb: おく, to do for someone else.
おく: Imperative form, do for me.
とって おくれ: give me!
yo End of sentence particle: {affirmation}

すると サルさん は、「うるさい ぞ、カニさん。こんな おいしい かき を カニさん に あげる の は もったいない。ほら これ でも たべろ」

すると suruto thereupon (literally: in doing so)
うるさい urusai noisy, here “shut up!”
こんな konna such
あげる ageru Verb: あげる, to do myself for someone else
no Enclitic particle: {the fact that}. Transforms what precedes into a name that can be used here as a subject for the rest of the sentence. For instance: The fact that you did not come yesterday is intolerable.
もったいない mottainai sacrilegeous, too good
ほら hora Look!
これ kore This: Indicates an object near the speaker.

じゅく して いない juku shite nai Verb: じゅく する, to ripe (refer to part 3 point 41).
じゅく して いる: Progressive form, to be getting ripe. する is an irregular verb is its て form is して and not すて.
じゅく して ない: Negative form, informal, to not be getting ripe. いる informal negative form is ない and not いない.
あおくて aokute Adjective: あおい, blue, green.
あおくて: Conjuntive form, used to list a sequence of adjectives, blue/green and …
 かたい  katai Adjective: かたい, hard, tough.
とって totte Verb: とる, to take.
とって: Conjunctive form. Indicates a verb in a sequence of verbs or proposition. Verb final conjugation is being held by the last verb in the sentence.
 いくつも  ikutsumo countless
なげ つけました nagetsukemashita Verb: なげつける, to throw at.
なげ つけました: Past tense, threw at.

それで、カニさん は おおけが を して しまいました。

それで sorede because of that (literally: that by mean of)
おおけが ookega serious injury
して しまいました shite shimaimashita Verb: する, to do.
して しまいました: Ended up by doing (refer to point 1)

いえ に かえった カニさん は うん うん うなって ねて いました。

いえ ie house
ni Enclitic particle: {destination}.
2 かえった kaetta Verb: かえる, to return.
かえった: Plain past tense, had returned. Here used to create a subordinate clause. Mr Crab that had returned to his house.
うん うん un un  Here figures a moaning.
うなって unatte Verb: うなる, to groan, to moan.
うなって: Conjunctive form.
ねて いました nete imashita Verb: ねる, to sleep.
て いる: Progressive form, to be sleeping.
ねて いました: Past tense, was sleeping.

すると、そこ へ ウスさん と、クリさん と、ハチさん が おみまい に きました。

そこ soko that place
e (not he) Enclitic particle: {destination}.
ウス USU Mortar, here in katakana and with さん to personify the object.
to Enclitic particle: {and}, in an exhaustive enumeration, here meaning that there is no other persons than the three listed.
クリ KURI Chestnut, here in katakana and with さん to personify the thing.
ハチ HACHI Bee, wasp or hornet, here in katakana and with さん to personify the insect.
おみまい omimai Visit to someone who is ill.
きました kimashita Verb: くる, to come.
ました: Past tense, came. くる is irregular and its past form is ました and not くました

カニさんは、サルさん の した こと を みんな に はなしました。

 した shita Verb: する, to do.
した: Past tense, did. Refer to point 2.
こと koto fact, abstract thing
の した こと shita koto the thing that (he) did.
みんな minna everybody, everyone
はなしました hanashimashita Verb: はなす, to tell.
はなしました: Past tense, told.

「わるい サルさん だ、こらしめて やろう」

わるい warui Adjective: bad.
da informal form for です: to be, to exist.
こらしめて korashimete Verb: こらしめる, to punish, to discipline.
こらしめて: Conjuntive form.
やろう yarou Verb: やる, to do, to perform.
ろう: Volitional form, let’s do.

「そう だ、みんな で カニさん の かたき うち を しよう」

そう sou In that way.
de Enclitic particle: {mean}. Indicates that what precedes will be the mean of an action, here all the persons in Mr Crab’s house.
かたき kataki Rival, opponent, foe.
うち uchi House.
しよう shiyou Verb: する, to do.
しよう: Volitional form, let’s do

ウスさん と、クリさん と、ハチさん は、そう いって、そうだん しました。

そう いって sou itte that said
そうだん soudan discussion, consultation
しました shimashita Verb: する, to do.
しました: Past tense, did

Now that you have been through all the different pieces of the text, let’s put it all together:

カニさん は、かき の き の した で まって いました が、いつまで たって も サルさん が かき の み を とって くれない ので まちくたびれて しまいました。
「おーい、サルさん、じぶん だけ たべて いない で、ぼく に も かき を とって おくれ よ」
する と サルさん は、「うるさい ぞ、カニさん。こんな おいしい かき を カニさん に あげる の は もったいない。
ほら これ でも たべろ」
そう いう と、まだ じゅく して いない あおくて かたい かき の み を とって いくつも いくつも カニさん に なげつけました。
それ で、カニさん は おおけが を して しまいました。
いえ に かえった カニさん は うん うん うなって ねて いました。
する と、そこ へ ウスさん と、クリさん と、ハチさん が おみまい に きました。
カニさん は、サルさん の した こと を みんな に はなしました。
「わるい サルさん だ、こらしめて やろう」
「そう だ、みんな で カニさん の かたき うち を しよう」
ウスさん と、クリさん と、ハチさん は、そう いって、そうだん しました。

Mr Crab was waiting at the bottom of the tree but, even though he stood there all the long Mr Monkey did not give him any fruit and he finished to get bored of waiting.
“Ahoy, Mr Monkey, don’t eat by yourself, give me also some kaki fruits.”
Thereupon, Mr Monkey said: “You’re too noisy, Mr Crab! To give you such tasty fruits would be a terrible waste. Look though, you can eat those.”
And while saying that, he started throwing many and many hard unripe fruits to Mr Crab. Because of this Mr Crab got badly injured.
Mr Crab who had come back to his house was lying in his bed moaning “Argh, ouch”. Thereupon, Mr Mortar, Mr Chestnut and Miss Bee came to pay him a visit. Mr Crab told all of them what Mr Monkey had done.
“Mr Monkey is wicked, let’s punish him!”
“You’re right, let’s take care altogether of Mr Crab’s rival house!”
That being said, Mr Mortar, Mr Chestnut and Miss Bee had a consultation.
