Hello Everyone,
Here is a new lesson on verbs. Today we will see the polite and plain past tenses, that is to say the -ました and -た forms.
If you do not know, or have forgotten, what Japanese verbs are and how they work (stems, types, forms), I invite you to read our introductory lesson: Introduction to Japanese verbs.
The -ました form
Usage:
The -ました form is used to:
- Express the polite past tense.

Type I and Type II verbs:
- Stem in い + ました
Type III verbs:

- する ⇒ しました
Copula:
- です ⇒ でした

読む (よむ) / to read /
遊ぶ (あそぶ) / to play, to enjoy oneself /
The -た form
Usage:
The -た form is used to:
- Express plain past tense.
Reminder: The plain forms are to be used only with close acquaintances.

The た form construction rule is not straightforward, but don’t worry it will come naturally with a little practice. So don’t hesitate to do and redo the following exercises, or to regularly exercise with our Everyday use verbs.
Example:
休む (やすむ) / to rest, to be absent /
Type? Ending in む ⇒ Type I
Stem: Remove the last character from the stem in う: やす
Stem in う ending: む, therefore according to the table above, た form: Stem + んだ
Threefore the た form of やすむ is: やすんだ
