In this lesson we are going to see the present/future negative forms of a verb: -ません and -ない. Let’s go!
The ません form
Usage
The ません form is used to:
- Express polite negation (present and future)
- As a base for orther negative forms
Construction
Type I and Type II
- Stem in い + ません
Type III
- くる ⇒ きません
- する ⇒ しません
Copula
- です ⇒ では ありません [dewa arimasen]
Examples:
飲む (のむ) / to drink /
- Stem in い: のみ
- ません form: のみません
Example use: コーヒーを飲みません。 (コーヒー を のみません。) / I don’t drink coffee. /
食べる (たべる) / to eat /
- Stem in い: たべ
- ません form: たべません
Example use: 明日、肉を食べません。 (あひた、にく を たべません。) / Tomorrow, (I) will not eat meat. /
Exercises:
Put the following sentences at the polite negative form.
- 本を読む。 (ほん を よむ。) / To read books. /
- 友達と話す。 (ともだち と はなす。) / To talk to a friend. /
- これはコンピューターです。 / This is a computer. /
- 公園に行く。 (こうえん に いく。) / To go to the park. /
- 家に帰る。 (うち に かえる。) / To go back home. /

Answers:
- 本を読みません。 (ほん を よみません。) / (I) don’t read books. /
- 友達と話しません。 (ともだち と はなしません。) / (I) don’t talk to (my) friend. /
- これはコンピューターではありません。 / This isn’t a computer. /
- 公園に行きません。 (こうえん に いきません。) / (I) don’t go to the park. /
- 家に帰りません。 (うち に かえりません。) / (I) don’t go back home. /
The ない form
Usage
The ない form is used to:
- Express casual negation (present and future)
- As a base for orther negative forms (where the casual aspect may disappear)
Construction
Type I
- Stem in あ + ない
Type II
- Stem in あ (-) + ない
Type III
- 来る (くる) / to come / ⇒ こない
- する / to do / ⇒ しない
Copula
- だ ⇒ ではない [dewa nai] or じゃない [ja nai], where じゃ is a shortened form of では, make it even more casual.
Examples:
飲む (のむ) / to drink /
- Stem in あ: のま
- ない form: のまない
コーヒーを飲まない。 (コーヒー を のみません。) / I don’t drink coffee. /
食べる (たべる) / to eat /
- Stem in あ: たべ
- ない form: たべない
A: 肉、食べる？ (にく、たべる？) / Do you eat meat? /
B: 食べない。 (たべない。) / I don’t eat. /
Exercises:
Put the following sentences at the casual negative form.
- ドアを開る。 (ドア を あける。) / To open the door. /
- パンを買う。 (パン を かう。) / To buy bread. /
- コンピューターだ。 / That’s a computer. /
- 窓を閉める。 (まど を しめる。) / To close the window. /
- 学校に来る。 (がっこう に くる。) / To come to school. /
Answers:
- ドアを開かない。 (ドア を あかない。) / (I) don’t open the door. /
- パンを買う。 (パン を かわない。) / (I) don’t buy bread. /
- コンピューターではない。 / That’s not a computer. /
- 窓を閉めない。 (まど を しめない。) / (I) don’t close the window. /
- 学校に来ない。 (がっこう に こない。) / (I) don’t come to school. /
