In this lesson we are going to see the past negative forms of a verb: -ません でした and -なかった. Let’s go!

The ません でした form
Usage
The ませんでした form is used to:
- Express polite past negative tense
Construction
The construction of the polite negative past is based on the polite negative present/future tense plus the past tense copula: でした.
Type I and Type II
- Stem in い + ません でした
Type III
- くる ⇒ きません でした
- する ⇒ しません でした
Copula
- です ⇒ では ありません でした [dewa arimasen deshita]
Note:
You will either see this form written with a space in it: ません でした, or without: ませんでした
Examples:
飲む (のむ) / to drink /
- Stem in い: のみ
- ませんでした form: のみませんでした
ビールを飲みませんでした。 (ビール を のみません でした。) / I didn’t drink beer. /
食べる (たべる) / to eat /
- Stem in い: たべ
- ませんでした form: たべませんでした
寿司を食べませんでした。 (すし を たべません でした。) / (I) didn’t eat sushi. /
Exercises:
Put the following sentences at the polite past tense and at the polite past negative tense.
- 新聞を読む。 (しんぶん を よむ。) / To read the newspaper. /
- バスに乗る。 (バス に のる。) / To get in the bus. /
- これはカメラです。 / This is a camera. /
- スーパーに行く。 (スーパー に いく。) / To go to the super(market). /
- 日本に帰る。 (にほん に かえる。) / To come back to Japan. /

- 新聞を読む。
- 新聞を読みました。 (しんぶん を よみました。) / (I) read the newspaper. /
- 新聞を読みませんでした。 (しんぶん を よみません でした。) / (I) didn’t read the newspaper. /
- バスに乗る。
- バスに乗りました。 (バス に のりました。) / (I) got in the bus. /
- バスに乗りませんでした。 (バス に のりません でした。) / (I) got in the bus. /
- これはカメラです。
- これはカメラでした。 / This was a camera. /
- これはカメラではありませんでした。 / This wasn’t a camera. /
- スーパーに行く。
- スーパーに行きました。 (スーパー に いきました。) / (I) went to the super(market). /
- スーパーに行きませんでした。 (スーパー に いきません でした。) / (I) didn’t go to the super(market). /
- 日本に帰る。
- 日本に帰りました。 (にほん に かえりました。) / (I) came back to Japan. /
- 日本に帰りませんでした。 (にほん に かえりません でした。) / (I) didn’t come back to Japan. /
The なかった form
Usage
The なかった form is used to:
- Express casual past negative tense
Construction
It is formed like the ない form, replacing the い by かった.
Type I
- Stem in あ + なかった
Type II
- Stem in あ (-) + なかった
Type III
- 来る (くる) / to come / ⇒ こなかった
- する / to do / ⇒ しなかった
Copula
- だ ⇒ ではなかった [dewa nai] or じゃなかった [ja nai].
Examples:
飲む (のむ) / to drink /
- Stem in あ: のま
- なかった form: のまなかった
ビールを飲まなかった。 (ビール を のみまなかった。) / I didn’t drink beer. /
食べる (たべる) / to eat /
- Stem in あ: たべ
- ない form: たべなかった
A: 肉、食べた？ (にく、たべた？) / Did you eat meat? /
B: 食べなかった。 (たべなかった。) / I didn’t eat. /
Exercises:
Put the following sentences at the casual past tense and at the casual negative tense.
- シャッターを開く。 (シャッター を ひらく。) / To open the window shutter. /
- 靴を買う。 (くつ を かう。) / To buy shoes. /
- 車だ。 (くるまだ。) / That’s a car. /
- 冷蔵庫を閉める。 (れいぞうこ を しめる。) / To close the fridge. /
- 海に来る。 (うみ に くる。) / To come to the see. /
Answers:
- シャッターを開く。
- シャッターを開いた。 (シャッター を ひらいた。) / (I) opened the window shutter. /
- シャッターを開なかった。 (シャッター を ひらなかった。) / (I) didn’t open the window shutter. /
- 靴を買う。
- 靴を買った。 (くつ を かった。) / (I) bought shoes. /
- 靴を買わなかった。 (くつ を かわなかった。) / I didn’t buy shoes. /
- 車だ。 / That’s a car. /
- 車だった。 (くるまだった。) / That was a car. /
- 車ではなかった。 (くるまではなかった。) / That wasn’t a car. /
- 冷蔵庫を閉める。
- 冷蔵庫を閉めた。 (れいぞうこ を しめた。) / (I) closed the fridge. /
- 冷蔵庫を閉めなかった。 (れいぞうこ を しめなかった。) / (I) didn’t close the fridge. /
- 海に来る。
- 海に来た。 (うみ に きた。) / (I) came to the see. /
- 海に来なかった。 (うみ に こなかった。) / (I) didn’t come to the see. /
