Hello Everyone,

Ready for 5 new katakana? Today we are going to learn characters: タ, チ, ツ, テ and ト, as well as their dakuten ◌゙ derivates: ダ, ヂ, ヅ, デ and ド. Let’s go!

Katakana タ to ホ

Tip:

To distinguish シ from ツ, think of their hiragana counterparts; like し is written from top to bottom you should stroke シ from top to bottom, and like つ is written from left to right, you should stroke ツ from left to right.

  • Write 5 times the word スーツケース / suitcase /.

This katakana is pronounced:

Fact:

テ is the symbol of the Japanese post office. This is the first character of ていしん / communication /.

  • Write 5 times the word テキスト / text, textbook /.

ダ, ヂ, ヅ, デ, ド

As for hiragana, the dakuten ◌゙ can also be used with these katakana to make some voiced sounds:

(rarely used, ジ is preferred)
(rarely used, ズ is preferred)

Exercises:

  • Write 5 times ダヂヅデド in a row
  • Write 5 times the word ダース / doz(en) /
  • Write 5 times the word デート / date /
  • Write 5 times the word ドア / door /

Half width ツ: ッ

Like with hiragana, there exists an halfwidth version of the character ツ which is used to double a consonant.

Exercises:

  • Write 5 times the characters ツッ in a row
  • Write 5 times the word チェック [CHEKKU] / checkered / or / verified, OK /.
    Note also here, as indicated in katakana lesson 1, that an halfwidth エ is used in combination with the character チ to form the sound チェ [CHE] which does not exist natively in Japanese.
