The て form
Usage:
The て form is used to:
- Connect verbs in a sequence of actions
- Express that an action was/is/will be in progress (-ing) (coming soon)
- As a base for other forms (coming soon)
Construction:
The construction of the て form is similar to the one of the た form, た being replaced by て.

Sequence of actions
One of the primry uses of the て form in Japanese is to build a sequence of verbs. For instance if you want to say a sentence like:
“I went to the park, ate an ice cream and came back home.”
you will say:
公園に行って、アイスクリームを食べて、家に帰りました。
こうえん に いって、アイスクリーム を たべて、うち に かえりました。
Now, having a closer look at this sentence, do you see how a sequence of actions is built in Japanese?
いって… たべて… かえりました…
Construction:
To express a sequence of actions, put all the verbs in the sequence apart the last one at the て form, and conjugate the last verb normally.
Note that, because of the way a sequence of actions is built, you have to wait for the last verb to see what tense/form the other verbs in the sequence shall take.
Exercises:
Express the following sentences as a sequence of actions:
- 今朝、コーヒーを飲んだ。(けさ、コーヒー を のんだ。) / This morning I drank coffee. /
- 今朝、チョコクロを食べた。 (けさ、チョコクロ を たべた。) / This morning I ate chocolate croissant. /
- 学校に行きました。 (かっこう に いきました。) / I went to school. /
- 日本語を勉強しました。 (にほんご を べんきょうしました。) / I studied Japanese. /
- 明日、ピアノを引きます。 (あした、ぴあの を ひきます。) / Tommorow, I will play piano. /
- 明日、サッカーをします。 (あした、サッカー を します。) / Tomorrow, I will play soccer. /
Answers:
- 今朝、コーヒーを飲んで、チョコクロを食べた。 (けさ、コーヒー を のんで、チョコクロ を たべた。) / I drank a coffee and ate chocolate croissant. /
- 学校に行って、日本語を勉強しました。 (かっこう に いって、にほんご を べんきょうしました。) / I went to school and studied Japanese. /
- 明日、ピアノを引いて、サッカーをします。 (あした、ぴあの を ひいて、サッカー を します。) / Tomorrow, I will play piano and I will play soccer. /
Here it is. Don’t forget that the て form is really commonly used in Japanese, therefore do not hesitate to come back to this lesson and practice.
Cheers,
Stéphane
