Hello Everyone,
In this lesson you are going to discover the -て いる form to express actions in progress or state. Let’s go!
Previous lessons:
- Introduction to Japanese verbs, the present/future plain and ます forms.
- The past tense ました and た forms.
- The present/future negative ません and なし forms.
- The past negative ません でした and なかった forms.
- The て form
The -て いる form
One common use of the -て form is to allow the construction of progressive forms (the -ing conjugation in English) at the past and present/future tenses, either non negative or negative.
Usage
The ている form is used to:
- Express an action in progress (progressive form, like the -ing)
- Express a state of being (like to be opened, to be closed…)
Construction
Polite past progressive tense:
- て form + いました
Polite past negative progressive tense:
- て form + いません でした
Polite present/future progressive tense:
- て form + います
Polite present/future negative progressive tense:
- て form + いません
Casual past progressive tense:
- て form + いた
Polite past negative progressive tense:
- て form + いなかった
Polite present/future progressive tense:
- て form + いる
Polite present/future negative progressive tense:
- て form + いない
Example:
読む (よむ) / to read /
- 読んでいました (よんで いました) / (I) was reading /
- 読んでいませんでした (よんで いません でした) / (I) wasn’t reading /
- 読んでいます (よんで います) / (I) am reading / or / (I) will be reading /
- 読んでいません (よんで いません) / (I)’m not reading / or / (I) will not be reading /
- 読んでいた (よんで いた) / (I) was reading /
- 読んでいなかった (よんで いなかった) / (I) wasn’t reading /
- 読んでいる (よんでいる) / (I) am reading / or / (I)’ll be reading /
- 読んでいない (よんで いない) / (I)’m not reading / or / (I) won’t be reading /
Exercises
Translate the sentences using the -ている form at both polite and casual forms:
- 本を読む (ほん を よむ) / to read a book / ⇒ / (I was) reading a book. /
- 勉強する (べんきょう する) / to be studying / (I wasn’t) studying /
- 足る (あしる) / to be running / ⇒ / (I) am running /
- 音楽を聞く (おんがく を きく) / to listen to music / ⇒ / (I m) not listening to music /
For this last question, express a state of being again using the ている form at both polite and casual forms:
- ドアが【開まる】 (ドア が 【しまる】) / the door [closed] / ⇒ / the door will be closed /
Answers
- 本を読んでいました (ほん を よんで いました)
- 本を読んでいた (ほん を よんで いた)
- 勉強していませんでした (べんきょう して いません でした)
- 勉強していなかった (べんきょう して いなかった)
- 足ています (あして います)
- 足ている (あして いる)
- 音楽を聞いていません (おんがく を きいて いません)
- 音楽を聞いていない (おんがく を きいて いない)

Note

読む (よむ) / to read /
- 読んでいる ⇒ 読んでる
- 読んでいない ⇒ 読んでない
- 読んでいた ⇒ 読んでた
- 読んでいなかった ⇒ 読んでなかった
Here it is for this lesson! See you soon.
