Handakuten ◌゚
You may already have spotted that sometimes, some characters such has は for instance come with a small circle (maru) on their top right. This small circle is called handakuten and its role is to create what is called semi voiced sounds.
Added to は [ha] for instance, the handakuten gives ぱ which is pronounced [pa].
The handakuten can only be appended to five hiragana characters: は, ひ, ふ, へ and ほ and gives the following sounds:
は [ha] | ぱ [pa] |
ひ [hi] | ぴ [pi] |
ふ [fu] | ぷ [pu] |
へ [he] | ぺ [pe] |
ほ [ho] | ぽ [po] |

- Write 5 times the characters ぱぴぷぺぽ in a row.
- Write 5 times the word りっぱな [rippana] / splendid, elegant /
- Write 5 times the word きっぷ [kippu] / ticket /
