Ready for some new katakana? Today we are going to learn characters: ハ, ヒ, フ, ヘ and ホ, as well as their handakuten and dakuten derivatives バ, ビ, ブ, ベ, ボ and パ, ピ, プ, ペ, ポ. Let’s go!

ハ

This katakana is pronounced: は

It has 2 strokes:

Exercices:

• Write 10 times the character ハ in a row.
• Write 5 times the word ハンカチ / handkerchief /.
• Write 5 times the word ハイキング / hiking /.

ヒ

This katakana is pronounced: ひ

It has 2 strokes:

Exercices:

• Write 10 times the character ヒ in a row.
• Write 5 times the word アイスコーヒー / iced coffee /.
• Write 5 times the word コーヒーカップ / coffee cup /.

フ

This katakana is pronounced: ふ

It has 1 stroke:

Exercices:

• Write 10 times the character フ in a row.
• Write 5 times the word  ナイフ / knife /.
• Write 5 times the word  フォーク / fork /.
• Write 5 times the word オフィス / office /.

Note: Here you have again, as presented in Katakana Lesson 1, you find two examples of the use of the halfwidth オ and イ to form some syllables which do not exist in naturally in the Japanese language: フォ [FO] and フィ [FI].

ヘ

This katakana is pronounced: へ

It has 1 stroke:

This one is quite easy to remember as it looks alike its hiragana counterpart, just give a little more accent to the angle at the top: へヘ

• Write 5 times the word ヘア / hair /.

ホ

This katakana is pronounced: ほ

It has 4 strokes:

Exercices:

• Write 10 times the character ホ in a row.
• Write 5 times the word  ホット / hot /.
• Write 5 times the word ヘッドホン / headphone /.

Dakuten ◌゛ and handakuten　◌゜

Like their hiragana equivalent, ハ, ヒ, フ, ヘ and ホ can be associated with the dakuten and handakuten to form new sounds:
